The fall racing season is just around the corner! Locally, one of the premier events is the EY River Run Classic. Along with a change in date this year, there are some exciting bonuses to take note of. In this week's Q&A we're going to get the scoop on it all from race director, Kim Ali. So let's get right to it!Q&A with Kim Ali
Tara: The EY River Run Classic is a go-to race for many runners each year; it's a well-organized and takes place on a beautiful course. Why did the race date change?
Kim: The SRRA determined that there was a gap in the Saskatoon fall race schedule and looked at ways to introduce a family run in conjunction with one of their races. They determined that the River Run needed a new date as July was consistently so hot for runners. So, the race changed seasons and we are excited about adding the family-run to this race.
Tara: This is a special year for the event, as it plays host to the 10K provincial championship. Would you mind telling us more about that, how it came to be, what it means for participants, etc.?
Kim: The 10K championships rotate through a variety of locations each year with the River Run often selected to host the championships. SaskAthletics sponsors the series of 10K races across the province which culminates in the annual championship. Winners can then go on to compete in the national championships. Medals are presented to the top three participants for both women and men.
The 2018 EY River Run Classic will draw some of the province's most competitive runners as it sets the stage for the 10K Provincial Championship. Photo suppliedTara: Of course, many of the participants won't be competing for the 10K championship, however, they will be testing themselves as they reach for their own personal goals. What makes this event work so well for all levels of runners?
Kim: It’s a smaller race, so less intimidating for newbies. Given the event happens in the fall, runners have more time to train with their friends and family in temperate weather. We’ve also priced this race very reasonably to overcome any economic barriers for those just starting out.

Tara: The EY River Run Classic is partnering with the Indigenous community this year to recognize Orange Shirt Day. For those not familiar with Orange shirt day, can you talk more about it and the role the River Run will play in it this year?
Kim: Orange Shirt Day is an opportunity for all of us to come together in a spirit of reconciliation offering hope for generations of children to come. We are excited to provide this opportunity for those who have set new goals for themselves, as well as young people across Saskatchewan who are training with the Sask Aboriginal Track and Field Association. After a few words from elder Eugene Arcand, First Nations drumming will signal the start of the race. Orange race t-shirts will be emblazoned with the new River Run logo, as well as the message – all children matter. Post-event food will include bannock, jam and tea. SIGA has come on board to support our Orange Shirt Day initiatives this year.
Tara: Is there anything else you would like to add?
Kim: Saucony is sponsoring the race – those who register before August 31 have a chance to win 1 of 8 pairs of Saucony shoes specially fitted by the experts at Brainsport.ᐧ
